The Heart and Soul of Tupu’anga Coffee

Here, you’ll uncover the roots, passion, and people behind our beloved coffee brand, as well as the journey that has shaped our commitment to quality, ethics, and community.

From Our Roots to Your Cup

From humble beginnings to the vibrant coffee brand you know today, Tupu’anga Coffee’s journey has been a testament to passion, perseverance, and community. It all started in 2010 when Emeline and Alipate Mafile’o purchased a coffee business in the Kingdom of Tonga. While coffee was a daily indulgence, mastering its art was a new adventure. They dove headfirst into learning the intricate steps of growing, harvesting, roasting, and blending, guided by a shared vision. The name “Tupu’anga” was chosen, meaning “To grow from your roots,” reflecting their commitment to origin and character.

Over the years, Tupu’anga Coffee has evolved into a brand celebrated not just for its exceptional South Pacific flavors but for its ethical practices, support for local communities, and the rich tapestry of people it brings together. Today, we’re more than a coffee; we’re a journey, a family, and a celebration of culture and connection.

Fuelling Change: Tupu’anga Coffee as a Social Enterprise

Tupu’anga Coffee isn’t just about crafting exceptional coffee; it’s a social enterprise with a heart as rich as its brew. Being a social enterprise means that every cup of Tupu’anga Coffee embodies a commitment to more than just taste; it represents a commitment to our people and our communities.

We’re dedicated to ethical sourcing, fair wages, and sustainable practices that uplift the lives of the people who bring this coffee to you. Our journey has created jobs, fostered opportunities, and strengthened communities in both Tonga and New Zealand.

We’re not just brewing coffee; we’re brewing empowerment, connection, and a brighter future for all. It’s more than coffee; it’s a cup of change, one sip at a time.

The Famili Business

We’re a ‘Famili’—a family. Our commitment to our Tongan heritage runs deep, and it’s reflected in the way we operate. As a family business led by husband and wife team Alipate and Emeline Mafile’o, we understand the importance of community and youth development.

Our roots in Auckland are as strong as those in Tonga, and we’re dedicated to giving back. That’s why a significant portion of our revenue is directed towards youth development and mentoring initiatives in Auckland. Through our program called Tupu’anga, run by the social service agency Affirming Works, we mentor and support young people, helping them find their path into tertiary studies and meaningful employment.

So, when you enjoy a cup of Tupu’anga Coffee, know that you’re not just savoring exceptional coffee; you’re supporting initiatives that make a real difference in the lives of our youth and our community. It’s coffee with a cause, and we couldn’t be prouder.
